It was a bright
chilly day as we arrived at The University of Lincoln in the UK, for my
appointment with The Head of School of Health and Social Care, Nigel Horner. We
received a warm welcome and waited in anticipation for the hour’s session to
begin.

I was
heartened to see so many students, lecturers and other staff, present for my hour-long
talk, especially in light of the fact that this was a lunchtime lecture, which meant
giving up their personal time to come along.
After an
introduction to my book, Known to Social Services, I spent some time speaking
about the qualities required to be a successful social worker. Using examples
from my own practice, I highlighted some of the potential issues and dilemmas
for social workers today.
This was
followed by a Q&A session, with some thought provoking questions from the
participants.
At the end of
a most enjoyable hour, there was time for people to purchase the book and have
it personally signed.

Students came from both social work and social care backgrounds
I was
encouraged to hear that several students had already read the book and had
questions, which I was happy to talk about.
Many thanks to
Nigel for inviting me to speak here; thanks also to the students and staff for
making it successful.
Freya
